Family gatherings during the holidays can sometimes be, shall we say, complicated and chaotic—at least from time to time. But designing my first site-specific holiday window display, The Magical Christmas Tree, and working side-by-side with my niece, a former student at The University of Iowa, to install the work was anything but that! Her infectious laughter made the experience all the more magical, keeping the mood light and fun from start to finish. She reminded me that art isn't just about the final product—it's about the shared experiences, the unexpected moments, and the meaningful connections that make it all worthwhile. And what better time than the holiday season to reflect on that?
The display was strategically placed at the Pappajohn Education Center on Grand Avenue in downtown Des Moines. Its prime location provided the perfect opportunity to create an impactful installation visible to countless passersby. This space is one of my favorites in the city, and its expansive windows became the ideal canvas for my minimalist holiday art display. As you approach The Magical Christmas Tree window installation, located on the corner of Grand Ave and 12th Street, a sense of calm and serenity envelops the space. Soft, ambient light gently fills the windows, drawing you into the scene. The centerpiece, minimalist Christmas trees made from delicate, ethereal paper, appear almost weightless, suspended in time and space.
The champagne-colored curtain tulle adds softness to the glass window and steel beam structure. The tree's simple lines and natural materials are complemented by subtle winter imagery—pinecones, candles, dried pampas, grass, stars, books, wooden ornaments, and soft shadows—deepening the sense of calm. Interactive interior and exterior QR codes provide an opportunity for deeper engagement, allowing you to connect with the installation personally and embrace the magic of the season in a new, more reflective light.
My holiday window display is part of the Winter Window Wonderland celebration in Downtown DSM, a community-wide effort to bring art, cheer, and local shopping to the forefront. From December 6 to January 10, 2025, visitors can stroll through the streets of downtown and enjoy a collection of enchanting holiday displays created by talented local artists.
I'm also thrilled to feature my PINE collection within the display, with pieces available for purchase through January 10, 2025. A portion of the proceeds will benefit THE FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION (FOE) Project. This holiday season, stop by and immerse yourself in the serenity of the Magic Christmas Tree installation—a peaceful space that invites reflection and renewal amidst the holiday season.
