THE FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION PROJECT
Launched in 2022, The Freedom of Expression (FOE) Project is a 12-artist group project dedicated to exploring the intersection of human experiences and the fundamental right to freedom of expression for individuals of all abilities. By showcasing the work of central Iowa artists living with disabilities, FOE amplifies their voices and fosters community collaboration through an annual public art exhibition.

In 2024-25, we will expand our vision with an adaptive fashion runway show inspired by the creativity of FOE artist Kevin Thor. This innovative initiative combines art and fashion to promote accessibility and inclusivity, serving as a powerful statement on the importance of representation and acceptance within the arts.
From September 2024 to September 2025, FOE will engage twelve talented central Iowa artists in collaborative and individual studio sessions at The Des Moines Art Center and Mainframe Studios. Throughout this period, these artists will create unique bodies of work, develop a large-scale group piece, and contribute to a collective fashion show in partnership with Nik Star Designs. This culminates in an immersive art exhibition in September 2025, a celebration of the creativity and resilience of these artists that will uplift and inspire all who attend.
Our artistic vision is rooted in the belief that art possesses transformative power, fostering equality, inclusion, and connection through free expression. By showcasing these artists' voices and work, we aim to demonstrate how art can serve as a vital connector and catalyst for social change. Additionally, we are committed to engaging a broader audience through online content, including a series of free public podcasts and YouTube videos hosted by Corey Dion Lewis on The Healthy Project Podcast.
The FOE Project is not just about art; it's about creating a movement that champions the rights of all individuals to express themselves freely and authentically. Together, we aim to reshape perceptions, encourage dialogue, and inspire a more inclusive society.
